USA Powerlifting, established in 1981 as the American Drug Free Powerlifting Association, Inc, is the leading drug-tested powerlifting organization in the United States.
Distinct from weightlifting, a sport made up of two lifts: the Snatch and the Clean-and-Jerk, where the weight is lifted above the head, powerlifting comprises three lifts: the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. Powerlifting competitions may be comprised of one, two or all three of the lifting disciplines.
Athletes are categorized by sex, age and bodyweight. Each competitor is allowed three attempts at each lift, the best lift in each discipline being added to their total. The lifter with the highest total is the winner. In cases where two or more lifters achieve the same total, the person with the lightest bodyweight wins.
USA Powerlifting is responsible for sanctioning local and regional events where powerlifters can compete in hopes of qualifying for the national level events. USA Powerlifting sanctions several National Championships in all age groups, giving athletes a chance to see how they fare against competitors across the country. Top competitors are selected by USA Powerlifting to compete in the USA Powerlifting Pro Series with an opportunity to achieve their Pro Card.

My name is Elizabeth Tomes and I love to plan events about as much as I love lifting heavy. My husband, Dr. Alex Tomes, and I have competed in bodybuilding and powerlifting for more than a decade. After working my way up as a luxury event coordinator in Phoenix, Arizona, I needed to find a way to bring that back home to our city of uncommon character. What better way than through strength.
Please show your support by participating at the event as an athlete, vendor, sponsor, volunteer or spectator. We are going to have a wide variety of local and national vendors to keep you fed, caffeinated and entertained. We look forward to making this event better each year for all involved.

We could not host an event of this magnitude without the support of the St. Joseph Parks & Recreation Department. The 19,000 square feet of unobstructed space that the Civic Arena provides is going to allow ample accommodations for our athletes, spectators, vendors and of course... the platform. Our goal is to set a new standard within the sport of Powerlifting (and ruin you for all other competitions).
The History Behind the Name:
The Pony Express was founded by William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors. Plans for the Pony Express were spurred by the threat of the Civil War and the need for faster communication with the West. The Pony Express consisted of relays of men riding horses carrying saddlebags of mail across a 2000-mile trail.
